CURRENT AFFAIRS US: Indian-origin man sentenced to jail smuggling 800 Indians Ambuj Sharma Jun 28, 2023 20:51 GMT USA: A Indian-origin man has been imprisoned in jail for smuggling more than 800 Indian citizens into the US from Canada. Rajinder Pal Singh pleaded guilty for taking US$500,000 as a key member of a smuggling ring that brought hundreds of Indian nationals across the border from Canada. He was sentenced on Tuesday in a US District Court. US Acting Attorney Tessa M. Gorman stated "45 months in prison for Conspiracy to Transport and Harbor Certain Aliens for Profit and Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering." Framing of Charges As per investigations between July 2018, and April 2022, the 17 Uber accounts tied to the smuggling took U$D in 80,000 charges. In a span of 4 years Singh arranged more than 600 trips. The used one-way vehicle rentals to transport those smuggled to their ultimate destinations outside the country .Rides were frequent in Washington state near the border in the early hours and were split between different rides. Investigation Singh admitted that the purpose of the complex money movement was to obscure the illegal nature of the funds. The smuggling ring used sophisticated means to launder the illicit money. Singh who is not present in the US legally will be deported following his prison term. "Mr Singh's participation in this conspiracy preyed upon the Indian nationals' hopes for a better life in the US while saddling those smuggled with a crushing debt of as much as USD 70,000," Gorman said.
