NATION One Nation One Election: 'One Nation, One Election' Bill Likely to be Tabled by NDA Soon The move comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi nears the 100-day mark of his third consecutive term in office, after being sworn in on June 9, 2024. Neha Kumari Sep 15, 2024 18:10 GMT One Nation One Election: The much-debated 'One Nation, One Election' policy could soon become a reality as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) plans to table the bill during its current tenure at the Centre, according to sources. The move comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi nears the 100-day mark of his third consecutive term in office, after being sworn in on June 9, 2024. The 'One Nation, One Election' initiative, a prominent part of the BJP's 2024 Lok Sabha election manifesto, aims to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies to reduce the prolonged electoral cycle. During his Independence Day address this year, PM Modi called for collective efforts to bring this legislation into effect, citing it as "the need of the hour." BJP-Led Government Set to Fulfill Key Manifesto Promise During PM Modi's Third Term In an interview before the Lok Sabha elections, PM Modi emphasized the importance of shorter election cycles, arguing that continuous political campaigning hampers governance. He said, “Elections should be held for three or four months, not all five years,” adding that simultaneous elections would also save logistical expenditure. High-Level Committee and Recommendations A high-level committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, was tasked with exploring the feasibility of simultaneous elections. In March, the panel recommended holding elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies at the same time, with local body elections to follow within 100 days. However, no specific timeline for implementing the simultaneous polls has been provided. Currently, India holds elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies separately, depending on the completion of the five-year term or if a government is dissolved early. The proposed legislation aims to streamline the election process, bringing a unified election cycle across the country, which many believe would enhance efficiency and reduce the burden on resources.
