The Bengaluru opposition meeting will take place on July 17 and 18. Eight new partners Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will also attend this meeting which was earlier planned for July 13. The new parties that are likely to attend the Bengaluru meeting are Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Kongu Desa Makkal Katchi (KDMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), All India Forward Bloc, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Kerala Congress (Joseph), and Kerala Congress (Mani). As the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) chairman, Sonia Gandhi is likely to forge a consensus among the different parties attending the event. She is also expected to solve the various tricky issues that bogged the June meeting in Patna of the opposition parties. It is not clear whether the Aam Aadmi Party will attend the Bengaluru meeting. It had said in that meeting that any move towards opposition unity is meaningless unless the Congress supports the AAP over the Delhi Ordinance issue. Problems in the anti-BJP front The opposition parties were earlier scheduled to meet in Bengaluru on July 13. That meeting was postponed due to the breakup of the (NCP) Nationalist Congress Party. Ajit Pawar, nephew of NCP’s Sharad Pawar walked out of the party and joined the BJP- Shiv Sena coalition in Maharashtra. After its meeting in Patna, the 15 opposition parties held a joint press conference. In the press conference, these parties decided to fight the 2024 elections on a common agenda and with a flexible strategy. They also promised to set aside their mutual differences. Meanwhile, Mamta Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress has said she won’t ally with the Congress in Bengal. However, she is ready to have a tie-up with the Congress outside the state.
