HEALTH Nipah Virus Resurfaces in Kerala; Fifth Confirmed Case Raises Concerns Sparsh Goel Sep 14, 2023 11:08 GMT Nipah Virus: A fresh case of the Nipah virus was confirmed in the Kozhikode district of Kerala on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases in the state to five. The minister reported that a 24-year-old medical professional at a private hospital has been identified as having the Nipah virus. Veena George claims that the health worker had at least 706 contacts, including 153 other health professionals and 77 persons who were considered to be at high risk. 13 Patients Admitted for Observation, 9-Year-Old Critical in ICU In addition, 13 patients with minor symptoms including headaches have been admitted to a hospital for observation. According to information, just a 9-year-old who had previously tested positive is currently in the critical care unit (ICU), down from three people who were there as of Wednesday morning. The Nipah virus infection is a zoonotic disease that can be passed from person to person, through contaminated food, or directly from animal to human, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). It can induce a variety of symptoms in those who are infected, including asymptomatic (subclinical) infection, severe respiratory sickness, and deadly encephalitis. According to WHO, the virus can also cause serious illness in pigs and other animals, costing farmers a great deal of money. Control Room and Measures Established After Nipah Virus Deaths After two recorded deaths that were thought to be caused by the Nipah virus infection, the Kerala government issued a district-wide health notice and also established a control room in Kozhikode with an advisory to people to use masks as a precaution. The health department established 16 core committees on Tuesday for a variety of tasks, including contact tracing, patient transportation management, sample test and research management, and surveillance.
