Fear Grips Kerala as Nipah Virus Cases Rise, Friday Prayers Cancelled

Nipah Virus: In Kerala's Kozhikode district, one additional Nipah virus infection case was verified on Friday after a sample from a 39-year-old man tested positive, bringing the total number of cases to six. This was said in a statement released on Friday by the office of state Health Minister Veena George.

Patient Under Close Observation

The patient was being monitored in a medical facility. According to a statement from the state's health minister, he had previously sought treatment at a private hospital where Nipah-positive patients received care for other illnesses. While there have been six occurrences of the Nipah virus overall, there are currently only four active cases after two persons died from the infection. Friday, there were 950 patients on the contact list. 213 of them are under the high-risk category.

Health Professionals on the Contact List

The contact list has 287 health professionals in total. On the contact list, 15 samples from the high-risk group have been sent for testing. In order to track down the contacts of people who tested positive using cellphone location, the health minister has ordered that police assistance be requested. In the private hospital, there are four high-risk patients, while 17 others are being watched over at Kozhikode Medical College. In order to "cooperate with the government authorities to control this disease," Friday prayers were cancelled and restrictions persisted in the Nipah containment zones in Kerala's Kozhikode. Secretary of Kuttiady Juma Masjid Mahallu Committee Zubair P said, "In the wake of the outbreak of Nipah virus in our area, the district collector and police authorities have directed us to not gather people in the mosque. Complying with the orders we have decided to close the mosque until further orders. Friday prayers will not be held today. We will co-operate with the government authorities to control this disease."
