Chandigarh: The registration of ICE (internal combustion engine) automobiles will no longer be allowed in the state, according to a statement from the Chandigarh Administration. According to the Union Territories Electric Vehicle Policy 2022, it will be off-limits to two-wheelers starting the following month, or July 2023, and to four-wheelers starting in December.

This decision was made with the intention of promoting electric automobiles in this union territory. so that Chandigarh City can realise the objective of environmentally friendly and green transportation, which is mentioned in the Electric Vehicle Policy 2022.

Chandigarh EV Policy

In September of last year, Chandigarh introduced its EV policy, which will be in effect for the following five years. The Union Territory plans to progressively transition to electric vehicles over the next few years, and such actions are intended to persuade more consumers to choose electric vehicles over petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles. According to the city's EV policy, about 6,201 ICE two-wheelers may be registered within a fiscal year. Only EVs will be registered following the limit. The Chandigarh administration anticipates registering roughly 35% of EVs during the fiscal year 2022–2023.

Since April 1, 2023, around 4,032 ICE two-wheelers have been registered in the city, according to information released by the Chandigarh Administration. Only 2,170 units can now be registered in the upcoming weeks. By July, this number ought to be finished. In contrast, the data indicates that there were just 257 registered electric two-wheelers throughout this financial period. Similar to the EV rules, only 22,626 ICE vehicles may be registered in a fiscal year. It is anticipated that this amount will be reached by December of this year.
